University of Minnesota - Morris

Morris, MN

The University of Minnesota-Morris says, 'The Skills component of general education helps students acquire the intellectual and communication skills needed for successful advanced work. The Expanding Perspectives component helps students gain enough understanding of the principal areas of human endeavor to continue learning and to have a sense of the limits of their knowledge. The Expanding Perspectives component aims to produce effective, inquiring, successful citizens who are able to understand how knowledge is acquired in many academic disciplines'the practices they share and those that diverge, the different approaches to asking questions and making conclusions, the contributions each makes to the broader framework of liberal education.' FIRE Speech Code School Rating
A yellow light institution maintains policies that could be interpreted to suppress protected speech or policies that, while clearly restricting freedom of speech, restrict relatively narrow categories of speech.

Warning: FIRE believes that free speech is not only a moral imperative, but also an essential element of a college education. However, private universities, as private associations, possess their own right to free association, which allows them to prioritize other values above the right to free speech if they wish to do so. Therefore, when a private university clearly and consistently states that it holds a certain set of values above a commitment to freedom of speech, FIRE warns prospective students and faculty members of this fact. Six schools surveyed for this report meet these criteria.
